Useful information during your stay at the Corto Maltes Amazonia
Climate
The climate of Puerto Maldonado is tropical and humid with high temperatures throughout the year, but especially in August and September. The thermal sensation of the combined heat and high humidity sometimes feels near 45°C. In most months of the year there is significant rainfall, but it is especially abundant October to April. The average annual temperature in Puerto Maldonado is 25.4°C, and the rainfall averages about 2221mm annually. During the winter, cold air masses from Antarctica can cause the temperature to drop below 10°C. These weather phenomena, locally called “friaje”, may occasionally occur April to September.
Vaccinations
Vaccinations are not compulsory for entry into Peru. While you are visiting the Amazon region (Madre de Dios) the Ministry of Health of Peru recommends vaccinations against yellow fever. In order to be effective the yellow fever vaccine should be administered at least 10 days before your trip. Therefore the decision for vaccination is left up to each person and their doctor.
Transportation
There are several bus companies traveling to and from Puerto Maldonado that offer good quality, safety, comfortable bed-style seats and meals on board. These companies include Tepsa, Moviltours, and Civa, among others.
Travel to the jungle is best by plane. Daily flights are 90 minutes long from Lima (with a stopover in Cusco). The airline flying to Puerto Maldonado is LATAM. We recommend that your incoming and outgoing flights arrive, at or before noon.
Most transfers from the city of Puerto Maldonado to jungle lodges are by riverboats with outboard motors
Money
Bar service, massages and boutique shopping are not included in the price of your program. In the lodge we cannot accept credit card, but payment in cash is accepted in soles, dollars or euros. However you can always pay with VISA or MasterCard in our office in the city at the time of check out. We recommend that you carry money in small bills and coins to facilitate payment of extra services in the lodge.

Water
Due to the high humidity and the climate, we recommend drinking plenty of fluids, including water or tea. Bottles of drinking water are located in the dining room and at the bar, so you can fill your own bottle or canteen. To be more environmentally friendly we recommend bringing your own water bottle to avoid the use of disposable plastic bottles. The tap water at Corto Maltés is unfit for consumption, but it can be safely used for bathing.
Smoking
Smoking is allowed in all outdoor areas, as well as at the terrace and bar. Please do not smoke inside your room, in the dining room, on the boat or during excursions.
Excursions
Excursion itineraries are detailed in the various programs. Established schedules can be modified in coordination with the guide. Reasons that may cause a change in itinerary include the weather, or the desires of guests. In the case of the guest not wishing to, or not able to go on an excursion, the particular guest will have to sign a record of “no-activity”.
Observation of fauna
Corto Maltés is in the middle of the jungle and its main excursions are within the Tambopata National Reserve where there are many types of wild animals. This means that there is a high probability to observe all kinds of wildlife, following the instructions of our guides. However, it is also possible that by the very nature of animals being wild, such animals cannot be seen.
What to bring in your luggage
Very important
Due to the transfer in small boats from the city of Puerto Maldonado, we invite passengers to repack their belonging in a smaller backpack or suitcase, in order to bring with them only what is required during their stay in the lodge. Large bags will be safely stored in that office headquarters of Corto Maltés in the city. Thus the weight of the boat shall not exceed the maximum permitted, and we can help facilitate the work of the lodge staff.

Services
Food
We offer daily set-menus (there is no service a la cart). Our menu offers flavors that are a fusion of international cuisine and typical products of the region that gives our food a gourmet style of its own. If you have any specific dietary requirements (vegetarian, vegan, allergies, intolerances, etc…) please notify our office to co-ordinate with the kitchen.
Electricity
Peru operates with 220 volts. Bring your own converter and adapter if possible. Whenever we need a small flashlight, especially in the jungle.
We are in the middle of the jungle where there are no city power lines. Our power is by generator for light, and is in operation at set-times throughout the day: from 7 am to 2 pm, and from 5 pm to 10:30 pm. In the hours with no electricity, each bungalow will not be without light. Each bungalow has two battery-powered LED lights. One light is located on the nightstand, and another beside the bathroom sink. You can find outlets for recharging batteries and electronic equipment both in the bungalows and common areas.
Since the availability of electric current is low, we ask you do not make use of hair dryers or irons, which could cause a failure in the electrical system.
The rooms do not have a mini-bar fridge, but if needed, we can facilitate the use of the bar or dining room refrigerators for items that must remain cold.
Due to the voltage available and the local style of construction used in our buildings, neither the installation nor efficient use of air-conditioning is possible.
WIFI
We have free WIFI connection 24 hours in the communal areas (bar, boutique and terrace). It works all day thanks to solar panels. It operates normally, except in cases when there are electricity failures, or during disruptions caused by weather, such as wind and heavy rain, which tend to move the tower and decrease the signal.
Safe
Each bungalow has its own safe. Please guard your valuables in it. Corto Maltés Amazonía will not be responsible for the loss of valuables that are not deposited in the safe.
Ayahuasca
If you want to experience drinking ayahuasca, please contact the office so that we can co-ordinate with our experienced shaman. The cost of participating in the ayahuasca ceremony is 100 USD per ceremony and per person (minimum 2 persons). In the case of only one person wishing to drink, the cost will be double (200 USD). It is recommended for people who take ayahuasca to particularly abstain from alcohol, pharmaceutical medicines, recreational drugs, pork and sex at least 48 hours in advance. Payment for ceremonies is made at the office, and the cost includes use of our maloca (a special place prepared for ceremonies).
